It stars Josh Hartnett, Ewan McGregor, and Ashley Judd, and follows the story of the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, based on the true events which occurred on the morning of December 7, 1941.
It was released on June 20, 2001 by 20th Century Fox. Upon release, the film was met with negative reviews from critics and it was also a box office bomb.
The film was a huge success in Japan, grossing $71,576,599 domestically, and $136,322,869 worldwide. It made $140 million on a $65 million budget.[1]

With the attack on Pearl Harbor still raw in the minds of Americans, the U.S. has passed the Lend-Lease Act, allowing the Japanese to continue their aggressive expansionist policy in the Pacific. Just before a U.S. patrol ship spots a suspicious freighter off the coast of Hawaii, Japanese warships attack Pearl Harbor.
USS Forresters (SS-231) Lieutenant Commander Jimmy Ramshaw is commanding the ship while Captain Bill Deneen is on shore leave. While the ship is refueling, two Japanese torpedoes are launched from a cruiser, the USS Southerland (CA-62), and strike the Forresters just as Deneen reboards the ship. The ship is set ablaze, forcing Ramshaw to abandon ship before it sinks. The torpedo hit causes a fire, killing the ship's two onboard radio operators.
Young Ensign Tom Chandler and Lieutenant Joseph Gay have been sent aboard the Forresters as replacements for Deneen. The ship is named after Forresters master, Commander Forrest Petersen. Ensign Chandler is a submariner and is the best swimmer in the Navy, but he is also plagued by injuries which include a broken ankle from a previous fall and a gunshot wound that is never explained.
Several weeks pass as the Forresters battle heavy seas while Lieutenant Gay searches for Deneen. After Ramshaw's death, Chief of the Boat, Chief Harvey Young, departs the ship, leaving the crew without an officer. Ensign Chandler and Chief Gay try to keep the ship operational as they are pressed to make it to Pearl Harbor. Ensign Chandler insists on an extensive gunnery exercise to prevent his injury from worsening.
In the morning, a Japanese submarine is spotted, forcing the crew to react. They head underwater as the ship is struck by two torpedoes, the first of which hits
